When Laser Technologies turned breakdown into a breakthrough

Laser Technologies believes in helping one another and ensuring the community grows together. During the winter of 2020, the world faced a huge challenge. The Covid-19 pandemic led to a global shutdown.

During the pandemic, Laser Technologies showed an indomitable spirit to fight against all the challenges, delivered over 250,000 face shields and helped protect India against the deadly virus.

Mr. Rakesh Agarwal, Managing Director of Laser Technologies Pvt. Ltd., and Mr. Swapnil Sansare from DivideByZero decided to give back to our society. They decided to build Face Shields to protect against the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.

These optically clear face shields protect the face from ear to ear and down to the neck from direct airborne aerosol splatter. In addition, they are highly comfortable to wear, weighing only 50 grams, and stay in place even during violent head movements.

The face shields designed by Mr. Agarwal were done on Laser Cutting machines using Acrylic sheets. They started making designs but couldn’t quite succeed in getting the desired headband part.

After a few attempts, they came up with a brilliant idea of creating a headband from the same PET material used in the main shield and using foam to comfort the forehead. This increased the raw material count to 5; PET main shield, PET headband, Foam, Double side tape to stick foam to the headband, and Elastic to tie the shield to the head.

As India was rapidly competing against the deadly virus, India faced its first nationwide lockdown. Everywhere it was shut. But Mr. Agarwal and Mr. Sansare wanted to protect the nation from the deadly virus. So, without making any further delay, both visited the local MIDC office and police station to get permission to operate, as this was part of “essential services”. The authorities were quite supportive and gave permission for 5 people to operate and continue with their services.

After a few roadblocks, the end journey was smooth and hassle-free. With continuous efforts, Laser Technologies and DivideByZero delivered close to 250,000 face shields in big hospitals like Sion Hospital, Apollo Hospital, MGM, Nair, Parulekar, Nandedkar, and Solapur Civil Hospital.
